Course description:

This five day workshop offers students an opportunity to paint the New Mexico landscape en plein air.  We will paint at a variety of locations in and around Santa Fe, NM (…yet to be determined for 2024. In March of 2023, the group painted in the foothills of the Sangre De Cristo mountains, Diablo Canyon, The Two Mile Reservoir, and Tesuque). Students will begin with a series of shorter painting exercises (light studies) and work towards longer compositional landscape sketches. Ultimately, this highly intensive workshop is meant to be customizable in the sense that each student will be encouraged to challenge themselves by finding new depth in their own artistic practice.  Instructor demonstrations and daily individual feedback will support the student’s engagement with their work.

- The Winter/Spring weather here in New Mexico can vary. Last March, we experienced the gamut from snow flurries and light rain to pleasantly warm sunshine. In general, landscape painting requires flexibility on our part, so come prepared for all weather possibilities. One thing I can guarantee is that the views will be beautiful, regardless of the weather conditions. Please understand that I cannot offer a refund because of unfortunate weather conditions. If - for some reason - painting outdoors is not possible on a given day, we will work in the studio on landscape exercises and projects that will benefit our overall painting process (both indoors or out).

- The transmission of ideas is my priority for your experience in the studio. Decent materials will make your life easier and the process more enjoyable, but I am quite flexible when it comes to what you choose to use as far as paints, brushes and supports go. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any specific questions about materials or anything else regarding the workshop. I will offer a suggested list of materials to registered students before the workshop begins.

- Transportation will not provided, however, carpool options are likely.

Home base for the workshop will be at The Ryder Studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico (1807 2nd St. #31)
